How Long Does Artificial Turf Installation Take?

Most residential turf installs take 2 to 5 days of on-site work. The full timeline from first call to finished lawn is usually 2 to 4 weeks — and most of that is scheduling, not construction. Here's the day-by-day breakdown.

Orange County, CA · Updated 2026 · Realistic timelines, not sales promises

The full timeline: 2 to 4 weeks

Days 1–3: quote. You call, we schedule a free on-site measurement (usually within a few days), and you get a written, itemized quote within 24–48 hours of the visit. This is the fastest phase — and the one where delays are your choice, not ours: comparing quotes takes as long as you want it to.

Days 4–14: scheduling and materials. Once you approve, we order your turf (most products are in regional stock; specialty colors or pet-specific backings can add a week) and slot your install. In spring — peak season — the schedule runs 2–3 weeks out. In fall and winter, often under a week. Your HOA approval, if needed, runs in parallel here — submit it the day you approve the quote, not the day before install.

Installation days: what happens when

Day 1: demolition and excavation. Old grass, failed irrigation, and 4 inches of soil come out. This is the loud, messy day — sod cutters, wheelbarrows, dump runs. A typical 1,000 sq ft yard is excavated in a day.

Day 2: base. 3–4 inches of compacted aggregate go in, in lifts, with proper grading for drainage. The base is the invisible 80% of a turf install — it determines whether the lawn drains and stays smooth for 15 years. Rushing the base is how cheap installs fail; we don't.

Days 3–4: turf, seams, infill. Turf is laid, seamed (glued and nailed, not just butted together), edged, then infilled and power-broomed. Infill goes in layers with brushing between — that's what makes the blades stand up instead of lying flat. Day 4 usually ends with the walkthrough.

What slows projects down

Access. The #1 schedule-killer: yards reachable only through the house or a narrow side gate. Every wheelbarrow of base and every roll of turf goes through that gate — tight access can add a full day. Tell us about access at the quote visit so it's in the plan, not a day-of surprise.

Surprises underground. Failed concrete mow strips, buried construction debris, heavy root systems from removed trees, drainage problems nobody knew about. We price the visible scope in the quote and flag likely unknowns upfront — the written quote itemizes what's included so extras are never a surprise.

Weather and HOAs. Rain pauses excavation (you can't compact base in mud) — rare in OC, but winter storms happen. HOA approvals that weren't submitted early are the most common avoidable delay. Submit the day you sign.

How to schedule around the install

Plan for the loud days, not the whole project. Demolition day is genuinely disruptive — if you work from home, that's the day to work elsewhere. Base and turf days are quieter. The crew needs driveway access for the dump trailer and material deliveries; move cars the night before day 1.

Pets and kids: the yard is a construction zone for the duration — excavated soil, open edges, equipment. Plan for them to be elsewhere or fenced off until the walkthrough. After that, the lawn is immediately usable: no curing, no waiting, no 'stay off the grass' period. That's one of turf's genuine advantages over sod — day 4 evening, the kids are playing on it.

Frequently asked questions

How many days does turf installation take on site?

2–5 days for most residential yards: day 1 demolition/excavation, day 2 base, days 3–4 turf/seams/infill. Larger or complex yards (poor access, slopes, big areas) can run a full week.

How long from quote to finished lawn?

Typically 2–4 weeks total: a few days for the quote, 1–3 weeks for scheduling and materials (season-dependent), then the install days. Fall and winter schedule fastest.

Can you install turf in winter?

Yes — Orange County winters are ideal install season: cooler weather for the crew, faster scheduling, and the lawn is ready before spring. Rain pauses excavation days, but our winters are mostly dry.

Will installation damage my driveway or existing landscaping?

Heavy wheelbarrow traffic and dump trailers are hard on driveways and adjacent planting. We use ground protection on paths and driveways — ask that it's in the plan at the quote visit.

Can I use the yard during installation?

Not safely — it's an active construction zone with excavation, equipment, and open edges. Plan for pets and kids to be elsewhere until the final walkthrough. After that, immediate use: no curing period.
